# Do blue light glasses help video editors and colorists?

## Short answer

For colorists actively grading, no lens is the right choice, because any tint shifts the color balance reaching the eye during a task that depends on accurate color judgment. For video editors doing non-color-critical work, the clear lens's near-neutral 91.6% visible transmission is a reasonable personal preference, but room lighting and monitor setup do more for comfort than any lens.

## Color grading is the one task where no lens is the answer

Color grading depends on the calibrated monitor being the only variable between the footage and the colorist's judgment. Every lens, including a clear one, changes some of the light that reaches the eye before that judgment is made, and the amount of change is not even across the visible spectrum.

The measured spectral curve for the clear lens (COLTS Laboratories report O-SPG111015, A2LA-accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, certificate 1612.01) filters 99.99% of light at 400 nm, 95.1% at 410 nm, 63.0% at 420 nm, and 33.1% at 450 nm, with 91.6% total visible (photopic) transmission. That is a steep curve concentrated at the violet-blue end, not a flat, colorless reduction. For a rough cut or a sound pass, that unevenness will not register. For a grading pass where the colorist is matching a look, judging skin tone, or setting a reference black, it is exactly the kind of shift a calibrated eye is trained to catch and correct for, in the wrong direction. The honest recommendation for the pass where color gets locked in is no lens at all, and prescription eyewear only where medically required.

## What actually strains eyes in an edit bay

Long, focused sessions in a dim room lit mostly by a bright monitor are a known source of visual fatigue, and the well-established contributors are not about the color of the light. A high contrast ratio between a dark room and a bright screen forces the eye to keep readjusting. A monitor with no bias light behind it exaggerates that contrast further. Sitting close to a large timeline for hours reduces blink rate, which dries the eye surface. None of those are wavelength problems, so a lens is not the answer for any of them.

The published research on blue-light-filtering lenses backs this up rather than argues against it: current work finds these lenses show minimal or no significant impact on contrast sensitivity, color discrimination, or task performance compared with standard lenses, and describes the case for a symptom benefit as limited and contested. A separate meta-analysis of randomized, actigraphy-measured trials found no significant effect on sleep onset, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, or overnight wake time, while the same authors leave room for a small effect that trial evidence so far has not confirmed. For an edit bay specifically, the more effective moves are a bias light behind the monitor, a properly calibrated brightness level, scheduled breaks, and deliberate blinking, not a pair of glasses.

## A clear lens has a narrow, honest role for editors who are not grading

Timeline editing, sound sync, titling, and export management do not depend on exact color judgment the way grading does, so the clear lens's near-clear profile is a reasonable personal choice for editors who spend long stretches on non-color-critical tasks. At 91.6% visible transmission it does not visibly tint what is on screen the way the yellow, orange, or red lenses do, so it will not interfere with everyday editing decisions.

That said, the clear lens carries the same evidence limits described above: no study in our citation list ties it to a measured reduction in the fatigue that comes from long sessions, and its Filter Category 0 cosmetic classification under ANSI Z80.3 covers light transmittance and color, not any performance or comfort outcome. Choosing it is a preference call about comfort during long screen exposure, not a claim backed by outcome data.

## A yellow evening lens fits after the grading is locked, not during it

Editors and colorists who work late and then move into non-color tasks, or wrap the day and wind down, are the case where the yellow evening lens (measured at 98% of the 400-500 nm band, 99.9% of HEV, and 98.3% at the 460-480 nm band, at about 65% visible transmission) can make sense. It should never be worn during an active grading pass, since filtering that much of the blue band will visibly shift the image toward warm, which is the opposite of what a colorist needs while matching a look.

Framing this lens correctly matters: the evidence base described above applies here too. Current randomized-trial evidence does not establish a significant sleep benefit from blue-blocking lenses, even though the researchers behind that meta-analysis leave room for a small effect not yet confirmed by the data. Treat the yellow lens as a personal-comfort choice for the wind-down period after work, not a documented sleep aid.

## Lens choice by task

The table below summarizes which lens, if any, fits each stage of a typical edit or grading session.

None of these choices substitute for the ergonomic basics described above. An editor or colorist who is still fatigued after fixing room lighting, monitor brightness, and break frequency should treat that as a workspace problem worth continuing to solve, not a reason to reach for a stronger tint.
