## Short answer

Blue light filtering lenses have not been shown to meaningfully change contrast sensitivity, color discrimination, or task performance from screen use, and evidence for a symptom benefit is limited and contested. ## What actually causes video-call eye fatigue

A day of back-to-back video calls creates a specific kind of fatigue that is mostly optical and behavioral, not about the color of light hitting the eyes. People blink noticeably less often while focused on a call than during normal conversation, which dries out the eye surface. Calls also fix the eyes at one distance for long stretches, with little of the natural near-far focus shifting that happens moving around an office or a room with other people.

Add a laptop screen closer than a typical desktop monitor, a window or ceiling light behind the camera creating glare, and a webcam angle that locks the neck in one position for an hour at a time, and most of what people describe as feeling wiped out by the end of a call-heavy day is explained without invoking blue light at all. This matters for what actually helps: fixes aimed at blink rate, distance, and glare address the mechanism directly. A lens tint addresses only the light spectrum reaching the eye, which the research below finds is a smaller piece of the picture than marketing for these lenses usually implies.

## What the research says about blue-light filtering lenses

Independent, peer-reviewed evidence on blue-light filtering lenses is mixed and generally underwhelming for daytime symptom outcomes. Khorrami-Nejad, Naroo, Oklla and Narooie-Noori, writing in Therapeutic Advances in Ophthalmology (January 2026), found blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses showed minimal or no significant impact on contrast sensitivity, color discrimination, or task performance compared with standard lenses; the authors describe efficacy for eye strain and circadian or sleep outcomes as still debated in the field.

A 2017 PLOS ONE study by Leung, Li and Kee measured that commercially available blue-light-filtering lenses reduced the calculated blue-light hazard, a lab metric of optical exposure, by roughly 10 to 24 percent. That is a real optical measurement, but a lower calculated hazard number is not the same thing as a measured drop in how tired someone's eyes feel at the end of a nine-hour call day — no study in this evidence base has established that link for daytime eye fatigue specifically.

## What helps more on a day full of calls

For most people, the highest-leverage changes for call-day fatigue don't involve a lens at all. Blinking deliberately every few minutes counteracts the drop in blink rate that comes with focused screen attention. Looking away from the screen periodically toward something farther away gives the eye's focusing muscles a break from holding one distance for hours.

Screen brightness set close to the brightness of the surrounding room, rather than much brighter or dimmer, cuts down on the contrast-driven fatigue of staring at a bright rectangle in a dim room or a dim one in bright daylight. Positioning the monitor or laptop at or slightly below eye level and at arm's length reduces both neck strain and how much the eyes have to converge. For calls specifically, checking that the light source used for the camera isn't also shining into the eyes — a common setup with a window or ceiling light behind the laptop — removes a glare source that a tinted lens has no bearing on.

## Where a lens can still fit in

A lens still has a sensible role in two specific video-call situations. Second, for calls that run into the evening, the yellow evening lens (same COLTS report) filters 98% of the 400-500 nm band, 99.9% of HEV light, and 98.3% at the 460-480 nm band associated with melatonin, at about 65% visible transmission. This lens may help ease the transition into evening screen time, though the strongest available trial evidence — a 2025 Frontiers in Neurology meta-analysis of three randomized crossover trials (n=49) — found sleep onset latency, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and wake-after-sleep-onset were all non-significant, and describes any effect on sleep as likely small and not currently supported by trial evidence.

## When a lens is not the fix

If the fatigue in question is ordinary daytime call fatigue — tired eyes and mental fog by late afternoon after a normal day of meetings — the honest answer is that a lens is not the fix here. The research above did not find a measurable daytime performance or comfort difference from blue-light filtering lenses, and the mechanisms driving that fatigue (blink rate, fixed focal distance, glare, posture) are not wavelength-related in the first place.

If the issue is closer to a laptop sitting nearer to the face than a desktop monitor typically would, and the user is over about 40, that is a near-focus optics problem rather than a light problem.
