## Monitor height, distance, and the seam between two screens

For a single monitor, the standard advice is simple: position the top edge of the screen at or slightly below eye level, and sit far enough back that your eyes are working at a relaxed distance — commonly stated as 20 to 28 inches, or roughly an arm's length. Dual monitors add one more decision: what sits on the seam between them.

If you use one monitor for primary work and the second as a reference (email, chat, a second document), center the primary monitor directly in front of you and angle the secondary screen 15 to 30 degrees toward you, so a glance costs a small head turn rather than a full body rotation. If you split attention evenly between both, center the seam on your body's midline instead, so neither screen sits fully off to one side for hours at a time.

When the two monitors differ in size, match their top edges rather than their bases — a monitor riser or adjustable stand under the smaller screen keeps both viewing angles level, instead of leaving your neck to tilt down for one screen and up for the other.

## Lighting and glare come from where light sits, not just brightness

Glare is easier to fix by moving light sources than by fighting them with brightness. Place monitors perpendicular to windows, not facing them and not with a window behind you — either position forces your eyes to work against a bright field every time they cross the screen edge. Overhead lighting should sit outside the direct reflection path from your eyes to the screen; if you can see a light fixture reflected in the display, your eyes are registering that reflection too.

A small bias light placed behind or beside the monitors — a soft, indirect source that raises the room's ambient brightness without shining on the screen — reduces the contrast between a bright display and a dark room, which is a large part of what makes screens feel harsh late at night. This is a lamp, not a product line, and it is usually the single highest-leverage change in a dim room.

## Brightness and text size that match the room and your eyes

Screen brightness should roughly match the room, not sit at a fixed number. A simple check: hold a piece of white paper next to the screen — if the display is noticeably brighter or dimmer than the paper under your current room lighting, adjust it. Two monitors from different manufacturers rarely ship at matched brightness or color temperature out of the box; if your eyes move between them all day, it is worth the few minutes to bring them close, using either the monitors' own controls or your operating system's per-display settings.

Text size matters more than most brightness settings. Shrinking text to fit more windows on screen and then leaning in to read it cancels out most of the benefit of sitting at a correct viewing distance. Increase zoom or OS text scaling instead of moving closer to compensate.

## Breaks, blinking, and posture add up over a full day

Screen time is worth managing on a schedule rather than by feel. The widely cited 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet away for 20 seconds — gives your focusing muscles a reset point without requiring you to leave your desk. Screen use is also associated with a lower blink rate than most other tasks, so a deliberate full blink now and then, rather than the partial blinks that typing tends to produce, is a habit worth building alongside the visual breaks.

Posture compounds with distance. A chair and desk height that keep your forearms roughly level and your feet flat do more for a long day at two screens than any lens will.

## Where screen glasses fit into the picture

Our own clear lens, tested by an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory (COLTS Laboratories, report O-SPG111015) to ANSI Z80.3, filters 99.99% of light at 400nm, 95.1% at 410nm, 63.0% at 420nm and 33.1% at 450nm, while transmitting 91.6% of visible light overall — near-clear rather than a heavy tint, so screen colors and paper both read close to true. That Z80.3 pass covers light transmittance and color; it says nothing about correcting focus or magnification.

Whether that filtering changes how a screen feels to use over a workday is a separate, weaker question. A 2017 study in PLOS ONE found commercially available blue-light-filtering lenses reduced the calculated blue-light hazard by roughly 10 to 24 percent — a measurement of light reaching the eye, not a measurement of comfort. A November 2025 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Neurology, pooling three randomized crossover trials with actigraphy data (n=49), found sleep onset latency, total sleep time, sleep efficiency and wake-after-sleep-onset were all statistically non-significant, and concluded current trial evidence does not support a significant effect. A January 2026 review in Therapeutic Advances in Ophthalmology reported minimal or no significant difference in contrast sensitivity, color discrimination or task performance between blue-light lenses and standard lenses, and described the evidence for daytime comfort and sleep-related outcomes as still debated.

None of that makes the lens pointless — near-clear color accuracy and a measured light filter are real, documented properties. But the honest summary is that monitor position, lighting, brightness matching and scheduled breaks are the levers with the strongest evidence behind them. Glasses are, at most, a minor addition on top of those, not a substitute for them.
