## Screen height and viewing distance

Set the monitor so the top of the screen sits at or slightly below eye level, roughly the height of your seated eyes when looking straight ahead. Your resting gaze should fall 15 to 20 degrees downward toward the middle of the screen. A monitor mounted too high forces the eyelids open wider, exposing more corneal surface to the air and speeding tear evaporation; a monitor sitting well below eye level does the opposite and can pull the neck into a forward-flexed position for hours at a stretch.

Distance matters as much as height. Keep the screen about an arm's length away, roughly 20 to 28 inches (50 to 70 cm), and enlarge text rather than leaning in to read it. If you wear reading glasses or non-prescription magnifiers for close work, remember screen distance is usually longer than book or phone distance - a lens chosen for the shortest task in your day is often the wrong choice for the monitor, and vice versa.

## Light and glare

Face the monitor perpendicular to windows rather than toward or with your back to one. A window directly behind the screen washes it out with glare; a window directly behind you creates reflections on the glass and forces the pupils to fight bright background light. Where you cannot move the desk, close blinds partway or angle the panel a few degrees rather than accepting either extreme.

Match screen brightness to the room, not to a fixed preference. A screen that looks comfortable in a bright office often looks like a spotlight once the room lights go down, and the eye keeps re-adapting between the two. Reduce brightness in the evening, keep contrast high enough that text stays sharp, and use a matte or anti-glare panel if overhead lighting keeps reflecting off the screen.

## Breaks and blink habits

Screen tasks pull blink rate down and the blinks that do happen tend to be partial rather than full, which lets the tear film dry faster than during other close work like reading a book. The routine most eye-care guidance converges on is the 20-20-20 pattern: roughly every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. It costs nothing and does not depend on any piece of equipment.

Dry indoor air, especially with forced-air heating or air conditioning running, adds to the same problem. Pointing a vent away from the desk or adding humidity to a very dry room addresses the moisture side of screen discomfort directly, in a way a lens tint cannot.

## Multiple monitors and laptops

With two monitors, put the one used most of the time directly in front of you and angle the second only slightly, so you turn your eyes rather than twisting your neck to check it repeatedly through the day. If both are used equally, angle them toward each other in a shallow V centered on your seated position.

A laptop screen used on its own sits low and close, which is the height-and-distance problem in its most common form: it pulls the neck down and forward for hours at a time. Raising the laptop on a stand or a stack of books to bring the top of the screen near eye level, paired with an external keyboard and mouse, corrects the geometry that a laptop's built-in layout gets wrong by default.

## Where a lens tint fits, and where it does not

Positioning, lighting, and blink habits address the mechanical and dryness sources of screen discomfort directly - viewing angle, glare, brightness mismatch, and reduced tear film. A tinted lens changes only the spectrum of light reaching the eye; it does not change any of those. The evidence on blue-light-filtering lenses for eye strain and circadian outcomes is described in the literature as debated, and one clinical review found minimal or no significant difference from standard lenses on contrast sensitivity, colour discrimination, or task performance (Khorrami-Nejad, Naroo, Oklla, Narooie-Noori, Therapeutic Advances in Ophthalmology, Jan 2026).
