## Gaming glasses and computer glasses are the same lens category

Sellers split blue-light eyewear into "gaming glasses" and "computer glasses" as if they were different products built for different eyes. In practice, both categories are built around the same design brief: a lightly tinted or clear lens meant to be worn for hours in front of a screen.

On our own catalog, the frames sold as computer or office glasses and the frames sold as gaming glasses use the identical coated lens, tested in the same COLTS Laboratories report (O-SPG111015, A2LA-accredited to ISO/IEC 17025). There is no gaming-specific coating or filtering formula behind either label - the distinction is a marketing category, not an optical one. Where the two do differ is physical: frame width, temple thickness, and how the glasses sit against a headset strap or ear cup, covered below.

## What the clear lens actually filters

The lens both categories share is a clear, near-colorless lens rather than a heavy tint. Spectral transmittance testing (per ANSI Z80.3 methodology) put it at:

Visible (photopic) light transmission is 91.6%, meaning the lens reads as close to clear - it is not the amber or orange tint used on our evening or pre-sleep lenses. UVA and UVB are both filtered above 99.99%. The same COLTS report recorded transmittance and chromaticity as a pass across all clear-lens samples under ANSI Z80.3 - a standard that governs how a lens transmits light and holds color, not how accurately any reading power is ground.

## The frame is where gaming and computer glasses diverge

The frame is the actual point of difference between a model marketed for gaming and one marketed for office or laptop use. Gaming frames are built with thinner, lower-profile temples so the arms sit flat under a headset band without pinching, and the overall shape tends to sit closer to the face to reduce slipping during movement. Computer or office frames prioritize a conventional look and a broader size range over headset clearance.

Both styles use the same anti-reflective coating on both lens faces, which cuts the glare and ghost reflections a bright monitor throws back at the eye - a coating benefit that applies equally whether or not the wearer is gaming. If the complaint is "my glasses dig into my head under my headset," the fix is a lower-profile frame, not a different lens. If the complaint is fogging, slipping, or feeling heavy after hours at a desk, that is also a frame and fit question, not a filtering question.

## What the research says about blue light and screen symptoms

Independent of frame or marketing, the peer-reviewed evidence on what blue-light-filtering lenses actually change for screen users is limited and mixed. A 2017 study in PLOS ONE (Leung, Li & Kee) found that commercially available blue-light-filtering lenses reduced a calculated blue-light hazard measure by roughly 10-24% - a measure of optical exposure, not a clinical outcome like comfort or sleep.

A January 2026 review in Therapeutic Advances in Ophthalmology (Khorrami-Nejad, Naroo, Oklla, Narooie-Noori) found that blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses had minimal or no significant impact on contrast sensitivity, colour discrimination, or task performance compared with standard lenses, and described the evidence for a symptom benefit around eye strain and circadian or sleep outcomes as still debated. A November 2025 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Neurology, pooling three randomized controlled crossover trials (n=49, actigraphy-measured), found sleep onset latency, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and wake-after-sleep-onset were all non-significant; the authors describe blue-blocking glasses as possibly offering small gains but say current trial evidence does not support a significant effect.

None of this means the lens does nothing - the optical filtering itself is measured and real, and a lens may help some wearers feel more comfortable during long sessions. It means the outcome most buyers actually care about is not something the current research base can promise, for a gaming lens or a computer lens alike.

## Choosing between the two, and when a lens is not the fix

For most screen-related discomfort, the highest-leverage changes are not optical at all: screen brightness matched to room lighting, a 20-20-20 break pattern, correct monitor distance and height, and blinking more during focused tasks address the mechanical causes of tired eyes more directly than any lens.

A lens choice matters more at the margins - for someone on a screen six-plus hours a day, a near-clear, anti-reflective lens like the one described above is a reasonable comfort choice, but it is not a substitute for those habits, and no PROSPEK lens is marketed as a stand-alone answer to eye strain. Between gaming and computer frames specifically, pick based on fit: headset compatibility and a snug, low-profile temple for gaming; a broader style range for general desk use.
