## Short answer

Headlight glare feels worse for drivers whose eyes scatter incoming light more than average - a normal effect of aging, early lens changes, or an outdated prescription - made worse by brighter, bluer LED headlights. Tinted night-driving glasses are not proven to help; a clean windshield, scratch-free lenses, and an up-to-date prescription with anti-reflective coating do more.

## What makes oncoming headlights feel harsh

When light enters the eye, some of it scatters off imperfections in the cornea and lens before it reaches the retina, creating a veil of stray light across your visual field that lowers contrast right when you need it most. This effect, called disability glare, is different from simple discomfort glare — it can briefly wash out detail on the road ahead, not just feel unpleasant to look at.

LED and HID headlights, now common on new vehicles, pack more of their output into a smaller, brighter source and skew toward shorter wavelengths, both of which increase how much a given headlight scatters compared with older halogen bulbs. The effect fades once the oncoming car passes, but how quickly your eyes recover also varies from driver to driver.

## Why it hits some drivers harder than others

Intraocular scatter increases with age — the eye's lens gradually loses clarity through your 40s and 50s, well before it becomes a cataract, and that alone measurably raises how much stray light spreads across the retina. An out-of-date eyeglass prescription adds to it, because a mismatched or uncorrected refractive error compounds the blur cast by an oncoming light source.

So do scratched or heavily worn lens coatings, and a windshield that is clean on the outside but hazy with interior residue on the inside — both scatter oncoming light before it ever reaches your eyes.

## What actually helps

The interventions with real mechanical grounding: keep the windshield clean on both sides (interior residue is often the bigger offender at night), replace scratched or worn eyeglass lenses, and make sure your everyday prescription is current. An anti-reflective coating on those lenses reduces the internal reflections that add to glare, which is a different mechanism from a tint.

Aiming your rearview mirror to its night setting, and your side mirrors slightly outward, keeps a following car's headlights out of direct line of sight. A regular eye exam matters here too, since the lens changes and refractive shifts behind increased glare are gradual and easy to miss until glare makes them obvious. None of this eliminates glare from an oncoming car; it reduces the scatter you are adding on top of it.

## Why tinted 'night-driving' glasses are not the fix

Yellow-tinted glasses marketed for night driving are a decades-old claim, and the guidance on them is consistent: the College of Optometrists advises drivers to wear their normal glasses at night and states that yellow-tinted lenses are not proven to help, and may make dark parts of the road harder to see. NHTSA guidance is aligned — any tint reduces the total light reaching the eye at night, when you already have less of it to work with.

The claim has drawn regulatory action before: in 1997 the FTC settled with the marketer of a "NightSafe" branded product over unsubstantiated claims that the glasses made night driving safer, banned that product name, and required consumer redress — a sign of how far this exact type of claim has been tested and found wanting, historically.

## Discomfort is common, crash risk is a separate question

Headlight glare is a real and common complaint — about six in ten drivers report struggling with it, according to a 2026 AAA national survey. That is a comfort finding, not a safety statistic, and the two should not be blended into one claim.

Separately, an IIHS/HLDI analysis of roughly 24 million crashes across 11 states from 2015 to 2023 found glare was a contributing factor in only 1 to 2 of every 1,000 nighttime crashes, with no increase over the decade even as headlight glare performance sharply improved (3% of 2025 models rated poor for glare, down from 21% of 2017 models). Discomfort from glare is worth addressing on its own; the data does not support treating it as a crash-risk problem.
