## Short answer

An FDA listing is a database entry a company files about itself and its products; agency staff do not test the lenses, measure a blue-light percentage, or confirm any wearer outcome. For non-prescription, non-corrective eyewear, no listing is even required. It is not proof of lens performance - only an accredited lab report with wavelength bands is.

## What the number on the box actually is

Some non-prescription eyewear packaging prints an FDA establishment or product listing number, often next to language that implies the government checked the product. In practice, that entry exists in a public database where companies file their own facility and product information under rules that require no advance review for very low-risk items like non-corrective sunglasses and reading magnifiers.

No agency reviewer measures how much of the 400-500 nm band a lens filters, runs a transmittance test, or checks a claim about comfort or rest. The filing is closer to an address-book entry than a pass or fail from a technician. Finding a listing number tells a shopper that a company entered its name and product category into a database. It does not tell them what the lens does at any wavelength.

## Why most non-prescription eyewear does not need one at all

Eyewear with no wearer-specific prescription and no astigmatism correction — a single-vision magnifier available in a small set of fixed strengths — sits in the lowest oversight category, the same one as reading glasses sold everywhere. That is a different, more heavily overseen category from corrective, prescription eyewear made to an individual's exam.

PROSPEK styles are non-prescription, with reading strengths from +0.50 to +3.00 depending on the style. Whether or not a brand's packaging mentions a filing status, that status is not itself evidence of anything about lens quality, either for or against.

## The arithmetic behind a single misleading percentage

A brand can print a technically true number and still mislead by choosing the most flattering point on the spectrum. Our own clear lens, measured by an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited lab (COLTS Laboratories, report O-SPG111015, A2LA cert 1612.01), illustrates why one number is not enough:

Quoting only the 400 nm figure would suggest far more filtering across the blue band than the lens delivers once you move 50 nm up the spectrum. Visible light transmission for this lens is 91.6%, which is why it reads as near-clear rather than tinted — but that same clarity is also why a fully clear lens cannot filter the whole 400-500 nm band the way a darker tint can. A separate clear lens from another maker, tested independently, filters roughly 52% averaged across the blue band while still filtering close to 100% of UV — a reminder that 'clear' and 'heavily filtered across the whole band' are not the same claim.

## What a real lab report contains, and what ANSI Z80.3 does not cover

A report worth trusting names the accredited lab, the accreditation body and certificate number, the report number, how many samples were tested per group (three, in our case), and a transmittance table broken out by wavelength band rather than one headline figure. It also states visible (photopic) transmission and UVA/UVB filtering separately from the blue-light figures.

ANSI Z80.3 is a real standard, and our clear lens group passed it on transmittance and chromaticity, filter category 0, cosmetic lens. But that standard measures light transmittance and color — it says nothing about whether a printed reading strength is optically accurate. A brand that lets a Z80.3 pass stand in for a claim about magnification accuracy is stretching the standard past what it tests.

## What the research says about filtering blue light and how much that changes for the wearer

A 2017 study in PLOS ONE found that commercially available blue-light-filtering lenses reduced a calculated blue-light hazard measure by roughly 10-24% — an optical calculation, not a study of a wearer outcome. A November 2025 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Neurology, pooling three randomized crossover trials with actigraphy data from 49 people, found no statistically significant difference in sleep onset timing, total time asleep, sleep efficiency, or nighttime waking; the authors call the case for a meaningful nightly-rest benefit unsettled rather than proven, while leaving room for a small effect future trials might confirm.

A January 2026 paper in Therapeutic Advances in Ophthalmology reported minimal or no significant difference in contrast sensitivity, colour discrimination, or task performance between blue-light-filtering and standard lenses, and described the case for a comfort or daily-rhythm benefit as debated rather than settled. None of this means a filtering percentage is fabricated — it means a verified percentage and a proven wearer benefit are two separate claims, and only the first one is something a lab report can actually confirm.

## How to audit any brand's claim, including ours

Before trusting a blue-light percentage from any seller, ask for:

* The lab report number and the testing lab's name
* Confirmation the lab holds ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, and from which accreditor
* The specific standard used and what it actually measures
* The wavelength band tied to every single percentage — never accept a percentage with no band attached
* The number of samples tested
* Confirmation the report covers the exact lens color sold, not a different tint from the same line

If a seller cannot produce a report number, an accredited lab name, and a band-specific figure, treat the percentage on the listing as marketing copy, not a measurement.
