The first section is about blue light glasses generally - the answers there hold whoever you buy from, and where the honest answer is 'this does not help', we say so. The second is about PROSPEK products and Spektrum Glasses policy. ## About blue light glasses ### Should reading glasses have a blue light filter? If the reading you do is on a screen, it costs you nothing to have one. A clear filtering lens is near-clear - ours transmits 91.6% of visible light - so the same pair works for print under a lamp and for a monitor, and you are not carrying two pairs. What it is not is a health intervention: for daytime symptoms, blink rate, glare and breaks matter more than the filter. Ask any brand which wavelength band its percentage was measured over, and whether the lab report is published. ### What is the difference between reading glasses and a magnifier? Ready-made readers are usually specified by strength alone. A reading lens can be specified further: the material and coatings, the measured light transmittance, and whether it has been tested for colour fidelity. Ours are the same coated optical lens as the non-reading styles with the reading power in them, and they carry a pass on ANSI Z80.3 transmittance and chromaticity across all samples tested (COLTS report O-SPG111015). Note the limit of that standard: it covers how the lens transmits light and holds colour, not how accurately the magnification is ground. ### Can one pair of reading glasses work for both books and screens? Optically, a single-vision reading lens has one focal distance, and a book sits closer than a monitor - so one pair is a compromise at one of the two. What removes the other reason for a second pair is the tint: at 91.6% visible-light transmission our clear lens has no colour cast to read through, so the blue-light filtering does not cost you anything on paper. If one pair has to do both, choose the strength for the distance you spend most of your time at. ### Are your reading glasses ANSI tested? The lens is. COLTS Laboratories - A2LA-accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 - measured spectral transmittance per ANSI Z80.3 in report O-SPG111015, three samples per lens group, and recorded a pass on transmittance and chromaticity for all of them. The full report is published on our lab-results page rather than summarised. Two honest caveats: Z80.3 is a transmittance and colour standard, so it says nothing about the accuracy of the reading power; and the pass described here is for the clear lens group in that report. ### Do blue light glasses actually work? It depends what you want them to do. For evening melatonin timing the mechanism is real, and a visibly tinted lens filters most of the blue band. For daytime eye strain the evidence is weak: peer-reviewed testing found clear filtering lenses cut the calculated blue-light hazard by roughly 10-24% (Leung et al., PLOS ONE, 2017). Blink rate, glare and breaks matter more. ### What is the difference between clear and yellow blue light lenses? Coverage of the blue band, and how the world looks. A clear lens filters hardest at the short end - ours measures 99.99% at 400 nm but 33% at 450 nm - and keeps colour normal for all-day work. A yellow or orange lens filters most of the whole 380-500 nm band, and visibly tints everything, which is why it is for evening use. ### How much blue light do you need to block to affect melatonin? There is no single threshold - the effect scales with intensity, duration and time of night, and varies a lot between people. What matters is the 460-480 nm region the circadian system responds to most strongly. Our yellow evening lens measures 98.3% filtration across that band; a clear lens filters far less of it. ### Are blue light glasses worth the money? For evening screen use before bed, a tinted lens is a cheap way to cut the light that matters most, and we publish the measured band. For daytime eye strain, spend on the free fixes first: screen breaks, conscious blinking, monitor distance and killing glare. If those are already handled and you still want a lens, buy on measured data. ### Do blue light glasses help with headaches? We make no headache claim. Some people are genuinely light sensitive and find tinted lenses more comfortable, and screen headaches often trace to glare, flicker, uncorrected vision or posture rather than to blue light specifically. Persistent headaches are worth taking to an eye-care professional rather than a lens. ### Can you wear blue light glasses all day? Clear-lens styles, yes - they are non-prescription with near-normal colour, 91.6% visible light transmission on our measured lens. Yellow and orange evening lenses are not meant for all-day wear: they shift colour heavily, and orange and red lenses are not suitable for driving at all. ### Do blue light glasses really block 99% of blue light? Only visibly tinted lenses can filter most of the blue band - our orange lens measures 99.96% across 380-500 nm, and it looks orange. A clear lens cannot. When a clear lens is advertised at 99%, the honest reading is 99% at one wavelength: ours measures 99.99% at 400 nm and 33% at 450 nm. Both numbers are the same lens. ### Why do brands report such different blocking percentages? Because a percentage means nothing without the wavelength band behind it. One lens can be advertised as 'blocks 99%' (measured at its best single wavelength) or 'blocks 20%' (averaged across 400-500 nm). 'Harmful blue light' has no standard definition either, so the vendor picks what it covers. Ask for the band and the lab report. ### What should you look for when buying blue light glasses? Four things: a filtration figure with the wavelength band attached, a named third-party laboratory rather than 'lab tested', the full report available to read, and a tint matched to when you will wear them - clear for daytime, yellow or orange for evening. Frame fit and a real warranty matter more than any marketing percentage. ### Do kids need blue light glasses? There is no strong evidence that children need blue-light filtering for eye health. The better-supported concerns with children's screen use are sleep timing, time spent outdoors and viewing distance. If a child uses screens late in the evening, reducing evening light exposure is the part with a real mechanism behind it. ### Do blue light glasses help with dry eyes? We make no dry-eye claim. Screen-related dryness mostly comes from blinking less while concentrating - something no lens can change - so the fixes that work are conscious blinking, regular breaks and, if needed, lubricating drops. Some customers do mention dryness relief in reviews, possibly from less glare and squinting. ### Are blue light glasses the same as computer glasses or gaming glasses? Mostly they are marketing names for the same thing. 'Computer glasses' usually means a clear filtering lens with an anti-reflective coating; 'gaming glasses' usually means the same lens, or a yellow one, in a wraparound frame. Judge any of them by the measured filtration band, not by the category name on the box. ### Are blue light glasses HSA or FSA eligible? Reading-strength styles usually are. Over-the-counter reading glasses count as vision correction, a qualified expense under IRS rules, so frames with built-in magnification qualify. Styles without magnification generally are not eligible unless your plan accepts a Letter of Medical Necessity. No. They are non-prescription. Many styles offer reading magnification from 0 to +3.0. ### How much blue light do they filter? It depends on the lens, and we publish the measured numbers for each: the clear lens filters up to 99% at the high-energy end of the blue band (99.99% at 400 nm, 95.1% at 410 nm, measured); the orange evening lens filters 99.96% of the entire 380-500 nm band.
