How does affiliate commission affect blue light glasses reviews?

Short answer

Affiliate commission pays a publisher a share of every sale their link generates, so the ranking you read is partly a revenue decision. It rarely produces false lab numbers - it produces selective ones: unstated wavelength bands, untested products, and orderings that track payout. Demand an accredited spectral report and a named band before trusting any roundup.

An affiliate link carries a tracking code. If you buy after clicking it, the publisher earns a share of the sale price. The price you pay is unchanged, which is why readers often assume the arrangement is neutral. It is not neutral — it just moves the cost from your wallet to your attention. Commission rates differ by retailer, by product category, and by individual negotiated deal. A publisher can earn several times more per click on one brand than another. That difference is invisible on the page but fully visible in the publisher’s dashboard, and it is the single largest input into which products get written about at all. This matters more in eyewear than in most categories because blue light filtering is measured, not felt. A reader cannot check a lens by wearing it. The claim has to be verified with a spectrophotometer and a written report. Almost no affiliate publisher owns one or commissions one. So the review becomes a rewrite of vendor marketing copy, ranked by margin — and vendor marketing copy is exactly the material that needs auditing.

The bias is selection, not fabrication

Commissioned reviewers rarely print false numbers. They print a subset. Four mechanisms do nearly all the damage:
  • Pool bias. Only brands enrolled in an affiliate network can be linked. A vendor with strong lab data and no affiliate program is simply absent from the roundup, which reads to you as absence from the market.
  • Order bias. Within the pool, the highest-commission product tends to land at the top or in the “best overall” slot. Ties are broken by payout, not by transmittance.
  • Omission bias. Numbers that would sink a ranking are dropped rather than contradicted. A lens tested only at 400 nm is described with its 400 nm figure and no band.
  • Category drift. Roundups reuse one product list across headings. A lens can be genuinely excellent at filtering and still be wrong for a use case.
That last one has a concrete safety edge. Our orange lens filters 99.96% across 380-500 nm and our red lens 99.83% across the same band. Both are heavily tinted and neither is suitable for driving. A commissioned “best glasses for night driving” list that ranks by blue-band percentage would put them near the top, which would be numerically defensible and practically wrong. That is what optimizing for a metric rather than a use case looks like.

How one percentage hides the whole band

The arithmetic is worth doing yourself, on our own data. Our clear lens was measured by COLTS Laboratories, report O-SPG111015, an A2LA-accredited lab under ISO/IEC 17025 (cert 1612.01), with spectral transmittance run per ANSI Z80.3. Here is the actual curve: Visible transmission is 91.6%, meaning the lens is near-clear with no heavy tint. Every one of those figures is true. A marketer could headline “99.99%” and be telling the truth about 400 nm while saying nothing about 450 nm, where the same lens filters 33.1%. That is the sleight of hand: a single-wavelength peak reported as if it described the band. The physics constrains what is possible. Filtering the whole 400-500 nm range means removing most of the blue that reaches the eye, and blue removed is blue you can see missing — the lens acquires a visible tint. Our ZENOX clear lens averages about 52% across the blue band with 100% UV filtering, which is roughly the ceiling for a lens that still looks clear. Our amber evening lens reaches 97.9% across 400-500 nm and 98.3% at the 460-480 nm band, and it looks like what it is: strongly tinted. Leung, Li and Kee (PLOS ONE, 2017) found commercially available blue-light-filtering lenses reduced calculated blue-light hazard by roughly 10-24%. Any near-clear lens advertised at 90%-plus across the full blue band is making a claim that curve shape does not support.

We pay commission too

If you have read a favorable third-party page about PROSPEK, there is a real chance the author was paid on conversion. We are stating that because the alternative — asking you to audit everyone else — is not a defensible position for a reference site. The correct response is not to discount affiliate pages entirely. It is to treat the commercial relationship as a reason to check the underlying measurement rather than the prose. So check ours. If a page about our products quotes a percentage with no band attached, that page is not following our own standard, and you should weight it accordingly no matter who wrote it.

What to demand before trusting a roundup

A short audit, applicable to any brand and any reviewer:
  1. Is the band stated? “Blocks 99%” is unfalsifiable. “97.9% across 400-500 nm” can be checked. No band means no claim.
  2. Who measured it? Ask for the testing laboratory, a report number, and accreditation — ISO/IEC 17025 through a recognized accreditor such as A2LA. In-house marketing measurements are not equivalent.
  3. What method? Spectral transmittance under a named standard such as ANSI Z80.3 tells you the curve was measured across wavelengths, not sampled at a convenient one.
  4. Does tint match the claim? A near-clear lens with a high full-band number is a contradiction. Ask for the photopic transmission figure alongside the blue-band figure.
  5. Are UV and blue reported separately? “100% UV” is easy and says nothing about 400-500 nm. Brands that merge them are hoping you will not separate them.
  6. Is the disclosure present, and is the pool complete? A page that discloses commission but tested nothing is more honest and no more informative.
One more caution about the underlying question. Filtering performance is measurable and we publish ours. Whether a filtered lens produces a symptom benefit for any individual is a separate question, and the evidence there is limited and contested — a well-documented transmittance curve does not settle it. A reviewer who presents a lab number as if it answered the symptom question has skipped a step, whether or not they were paid to.
