Yes, wearing blue light glasses outside will not hurt you, but a clear lens is not a sunglasses substitute. Physically, nothing bad happens from wearing blue light glasses in daylight. The lens does not become unsafe, it does not concentrate light, and there is no reason to take them off just because you stepped outside. The real question is what the lens is built to do once you are there, and for a clear lens the honest answer is: not much that a pair of sunglasses does. Our clear lens (COLTS Laboratories report O-SPG111015, tested to ISO/IEC 17025 by an A2LA-accredited lab, spectral transmittance measured per ANSI Z80.3) transmits 91.6% of visible light. That is by design: the lens is meant to sit on your face all day at a desk or in front of a screen without darkening the room or shifting colors, and it does that job well. Outdoors, the same property means it is doing almost nothing to cut brightness. A lens built to reduce glare in direct sun runs far below 91.6% visible transmission; ours does not. The same report classifies the clear lens as ANSI Z80.3 filter category 0, a cosmetic lens. Z80.3 governs light transmittance and color for non-prescription sunglass and fashion eyewear; category 0 is the clear, cosmetic end of that scale, not a sunglasses rating. Two different measurements sit inside that one lens, and outdoors only one of them does much work. Blue-light filtering is wavelength-specific and tapers fast: 99.99% filtered at 400nm, 95.1% at 410nm, 63.0% at 420nm, and 33.1% at 450nm. Sunlight is broadband, not concentrated in that narrow slice, so this taper has little to do with how bright the sun feels through the lens. UVA and UVB are a separate measurement from blue light, and both come back filtered above 99.99% in the same report. That is a real, lab-measured optical property of the lens material and coating. Not every blue light lens is the near-clear day lens, and none of the tinted ones are meant for outdoor sun use:- Clear (day) lens: 91.6% visible-light transmission, UVA and UVB each filtered above 99.99% at their measured wavelengths. Built for screens and daytime indoor wear, not glare reduction.
- Yellow (evening) lens: about 65% visible-light transmission, 98% of the 400-500nm band and 98.3% of the 460-480nm band filtered. Built for working late without going fully dark, not for outdoor light.

- Red (night) lens: 99.83% filtered across 380-500nm, same lab. Built for the last hour before sleep.
What to check before you buy a pair to wear outside
If you want glasses that double as daytime outdoor eyewear, the label to look for is not “blocks blue light,” it is a stated visible-light transmission figure and a sunglasses category rating, ideally backed by an accredited lab test rather than a marketing page. A bare blue-light percentage with no wavelength band attached tells you nothing about glare, and most blue-light glasses, ours included in the clear style, are built as near-clear cosmetic lenses regardless of what number is printed on the box. A few concrete checks before buying, from any brand:- Ask what visible-light transmission the lens measures at. A true sun lens sits well below the 91.6% our clear lens tests at; a lens in the 80-90%-plus range is a screen lens, not a sun lens, whatever the tint color.
- Ask what standard the transmittance and color were tested against, and whether the lab is accredited. “ANSI Z80.3 tested” on a spec sheet is a real, checkable claim; “UV protection” with no percentage or band is not.
- Treat blue-light filtering and UV filtering as two separate numbers. A lens can filter UV well and still let in nearly all visible light, which is exactly what happens with a clear day lens outdoors.
- If the goal is one pair for sun and one for screens, buy two products. A clear blue-light lens and a pair of actual sunglasses are solving different problems, and no single 91.6%-transmission lens will do both jobs at once.
