Can you wear blue light glasses all day?

Clear lenses are built for all-day wear

Our clear PROSPEK lens transmits 91.6% of visible light, measured as part of COLTS Laboratories report O-SPG111015, run under ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation (certificate 1612.01) with spectral transmittance measured per ANSI Z80.3. That figure matters more than any single blue-light percentage for the ‘can I wear these all day’ question: at 91.6% visible transmission the lens is close to clear glass, not a tinted product, so it does not dim a room, shift colors, or force your eyes to adjust the way a sunglass-style tint would. The clear lens passed ANSI Z80.3’s transmittance and color tests as a category 0, cosmetic lens. That standard checks light transmittance and color, not whether a printed reading-magnification number is accurate - so a strong ANSI Z80.3 result tells you about tint and clarity, nothing about the reading power itself on frames that carry one.

The evening tint is a different lens for a different job

The same COLTS report also measured PROSPEK’s yellow evening lens (the report itself labels this tint family ‘amber’; PROSPEK’s own naming for it is yellow). It filters about 98% of the 400-500 nm blue band, 99.9% of high-energy visible light overall, and 98.3% specifically at the 460-480 nm band most associated with melatonin timing - while transmitting only about 65% of visible light overall. That 65% figure is why this lens is not an all-day pair: removing roughly a third of visible light changes how colors read on a screen or on paper and is noticeable indoors. It is built for the hours before bed, not for office or outdoor use. PROSPEK’s orange and red lenses go further still - 99.96% and 99.83% filtered across 380-500 nm - and neither is suitable for driving. If a pair is tinted enough to notice, consider it a single-purpose lens for a specific time of day, not a do-everything pair.

Why a blue-light percentage needs its wavelength band

Filtering strength is not one number - it changes sharply across the spectrum, and a claim that skips the wavelength is not verifiable. On PROSPEK’s clear lens, the same COLTS report shows 99.99% filtered at 400 nm, 95.1% at 410 nm, 63.0% at 420 nm, and 33.1% at 450 nm - a steep drop from the UV edge into the middle of the visible blue band. Both UVA and UVB are filtered above 99.99%. That falloff is normal for a clear, near-colorless lens: heavy filtering near UV, much lighter filtering deeper into visible blue, which is exactly what keeps the lens looking clear enough for all-day wear. For comparison, PROSPEK’s own ZENOX clear lens averages about 52% across the blue band with 100% UV filtered - two lenses can both be marketed as ‘clear, UV-blocking’ and land at very different blue-light numbers. If a listing states a blue-light percentage with no wavelength range attached, there is no way to know which part of the spectrum, or how much of the visible range, it actually covers.

What the research says about eye strain and sleep

Independent research on blue-light lenses is real but modest, and largely does not support strong marketing claims. A 2017 study in PLOS ONE found that commercially available blue-light-filtering lenses reduced the calculated blue-light hazard - an optical measurement, not a clinical outcome - by roughly 10 to 24 percent compared with standard lenses. Clinical outcomes are a separate question. A 2026 review in Therapeutic Advances in Ophthalmology (Khorrami-Nejad, Naroo, Oklla and Narooie-Noori) found blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses had a minimal or no significant effect on contrast sensitivity, color discrimination, or task performance versus standard lenses, and described the evidence for eye-strain and sleep-related outcomes as debated. A November 2025 meta-analysis of three randomized crossover trials in Frontiers in Neurology, using actigraphy to measure sleep, found no statistically significant difference in sleep onset latency, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, or wake time after sleep onset between blue-blocking and control lenses; the authors describe current trial evidence as not supporting a meaningful effect, while allowing that a small effect could not be ruled out. None of this makes all-day wear risky - the clear lens is optically close to no lens at all, at 91.6% visible transmission. It does mean the current research does not establish a symptom benefit for eye strain or sleep, so a marketing claim promising one is running ahead of the data.

What to check before buying a pair for all-day wear

  • Visible light transmission percentage: look for a published number (ours is 91.6% for the clear lens); without a visible-transmission figure, you can’t tell whether a lens is clear enough for daytime use or tinted enough to notice.
  • Wavelength band on every blue-light claim: a percentage without nanometers attached is not a testable claim.
  • Independent lab testing: check whether transmittance and color were measured under a recognized standard such as ANSI Z80.3 by an accredited lab (ISO/IEC 17025, A2LA or similar) - and remember that standard covers transmittance and color, not reading-power accuracy.
  • Fit and weight: a pair meant for all-day wear should sit comfortably for hours - check frame material and weight specs, not just lens claims.
