Do blue light lenses scratch easily?

Short answer

Blue-light filtering does not make a lens scratch more easily. Scratch resistance comes from the lens material and any hard coating applied at manufacturing, not from a blue-light filter or tint, which is a separate treatment. Any non-prescription lens, filtered or not, can scratch without basic care, so what matters is the coating and how the glasses are cleaned and stored.

Scratching is a material and coating question, not a blue-light question

Whether a lens scratches easily comes down to two things: the base material of the lens (glass scratches less easily than most plastics) and whether a scratch-resistant hard coat was applied during manufacturing. Blue-light filtering is a separate treatment, added either as a coating layer or as a tint built into the lens material itself. Neither method changes the physical hardness of the lens surface. That means comparing a blue-light-filtering lens to a plain lens of the same material and coating should not show a meaningful difference in scratch resistance. • Wiping a dry lens with a shirt, tissue, or paper towel, which grinds dust and grit across the surface
• Cleaning with household glass or ammonia-based cleaners, which can degrade plastic and any coating over time
• Carrying glasses loose in a pocket or bag instead of a hard case
• Setting glasses down lens-side on a table or counter

Rinsing the lenses under water to knock off loose grit before wiping, then drying with a clean microfiber cloth, and storing them in a hard case when not worn, addresses most of the risk regardless of brand or lens type.

What to check before buying, from any brand

Before buying non-prescription glasses anywhere, it’s worth asking two separate questions rather than one: what is the lens material, and does the lens carry a scratch-resistant hard coat in addition to any blue-light or anti-reflective coating. A listing that only advertises blue-light filtering percentages is not telling you anything about durability. On price: hard coatings add a real manufacturing step and cost, so a price point far below the rest of the category can be a signal that step was skipped, though it isn’t proof either way without the coating spec. Don’t treat an optical standard like ANSI Z80.3 as evidence of scratch resistance; it governs transmittance and color, not surface hardness.
