What eye doctors and regulators actually say
The UK College of Optometrists advises drivers to wear their normal glasses at night rather than switch to a yellow or amber tint, and it states plainly that yellow-tinted lenses are not proven to help after dark - and can make the darker parts of a road harder to pick out. NHTSA guidance takes a similar position: putting a tint between the eyes and the road cuts the amount of light reaching the eye at exactly the time of day when the pupils are already working hardest to gather what light there is. Neither position is a marketing claim. One comes from a professional optometry body, the other from a federal transportation safety agency, and both point the same direction: a tinted lens is not a recommended tool for driving in low light.The crash data behind headlight glare
Two data sources speak to headlight glare, and they answer two different questions. IIHS/HLDI analyzed roughly 24 million crashes across 11 US states from 2015 to 2023 and found glare was a contributing factor in only 1 to 2 of every 1,000 nighttime crashes - a rate that did not rise over the study period, even as headlight glare performance improved sharply (poor glare ratings fell from 21% of model-year-2017 headlight systems to 3% of model-year-2025 systems). On the question of crash risk specifically, glare is rare and getting rarer. A 2026 AAA national survey asked a different question - how driving with headlight glare feels day to day - and found about six in ten drivers report struggling with it. Both things are true at once: glare discomfort is common and real, and it is only rarely a factor in an actual crash. Neither data set was built to test whether a tinted lens changes either number, so this page does not extrapolate one from the other.A regulatory precedent worth knowing
This category has a documented legal history. In 1997 the FTC settled a case against the marketer of tinted “NightSafe” eyewear, finding that its driving-safety claims were unsubstantiated. Our own yellow evening lens has been measured, not just described. Per COLTS Laboratories report O-SPG111015 (A2LA-accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, spectral transmittance measured per ANSI Z80.3), it filters 98% of the 400-500 nm blue light band, 99.9% of high-energy visible (HEV) light, and 98.3% of the 460-480 nm band associated with melatonin, while passing about 65% of visible light overall. (The lab report itself labels this an “amber” lens; we call it yellow because that is the color it appears.) That is a tint and light-filtering measurement, not a claim about driving performance. At roughly 65% visible transmission, this lens passes noticeably less light than our clear lens (91.6% visible transmission) - the opposite of what the guidance above says is useful in low light. We built the yellow lens as an evening-comfort tint for indoor light and screens, and we do not present it, or any tinted lens, as a fix for headlight glare or night driving.What actually helps behind the wheel at night
If glare or difficulty driving at night is the real problem, the fixes with evidence behind them sit with an eye doctor and with the car, not with a tinted lens.- An updated prescription: uncorrected or outdated refractive error is a common, fixable driver of nighttime glare and halos, worth ruling out first.
- Anti-reflective coating on prescription lenses, which cuts the internal lens reflections that turn an oncoming headlight into a starburst.
- Clean glass, inside and out: a film on a windshield or on eyeglass lenses scatters headlight beams far more than clean glass does.
- Headlight aim: a misaimed headlight is a glare source for oncoming drivers as much as it is a problem for the driver behind the wheel.
- A comprehensive eye exam, particularly for older drivers, since normal age-related changes affect how much glare and halo a driver perceives at night.
Bottom line
No eye-care body or safety regulator cited above endorses a yellow tint as a night-driving tool, and the crash data does not describe a glare problem that a lens is positioned to solve.
