What truck drivers face on a night shift
Long-haul and regional drivers who run nights spend hours facing oncoming headlights, many of them brighter LED and HID units that sit higher and glare more than older halogen lamps. Add reflective work-zone signage, wet pavement, and a windshield that has not been cleaned inside and out in a week, and the eyes are working harder than they would during a daytime shift covering the same miles. Fatigue compounds this: night driving runs against the body’s normal wake cycle, and a tired driver reacts more slowly to a glare source regardless of what lens is in front of their eyes. This is the situation that “night driving glasses” are marketed into, and it is worth separating two different problems before reaching for a product: momentary discomfort from a bright oncoming light, which is common and real, and a change in how safely or clearly the road can be seen, which is a much higher bar that a spectacle lens is unlikely to clear on its own.What the evidence on glare actually shows
Headlight glare discomfort is common: a 2026 AAA national survey found about six in ten drivers report struggling with it. That is a real, widely shared experience, not something to dismiss. But discomfort and crash risk are two different questions, and the crash-risk data does not point at glare as a major factor. An IIHS/HLDI analysis of roughly 24 million crashes across 11 US states from 2015 to 2023 found glare was a contributing factor in only 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 nighttime crashes, with no increase over that decade even as headlights got brighter. Headlight glare performance is also improving quickly: only 3 percent of model-year 2025 headlight systems were rated poor for glare, versus 21 percent in model-year 2017. On tinted lenses specifically, the UK College of Optometrists advises drivers to wear their normal glasses at night and states that yellow-tinted lenses are not proven to help and can make dark parts of the road harder to see; NHTSA guidance similarly warns that a tinted lens cuts the amount of light reaching the eye after dark. In 1997 the FTC settled with a marketer of “NightSafe” eyeglasses over unsubstantiated claims that the product made night driving safer, banned that product name, and required $125,000 in consumer redress — a reminder that regulators have looked closely at this category before.Why none of PROSPEK’s lenses belong behind the wheel at night
None of our lens options are built or intended for use while driving after dark. The orange lens filters 99.96 percent of light across 380-500 nm and the red lens filters 99.83 percent across the same band (both measured in 2026 by our lens manufacturer’s optical laboratory) — these are deliberately heavy tints for indoor evening use, and neither is suitable for driving. The yellow evening lens (COLTS Laboratories report O-SPG111015, A2LA-accredited to ISO/IEC 17025) filters 98 percent of the 400-500 nm blue band and 98.3 percent at the 460-480 nm band, at about 65 percent visible-light transmission. That is exactly the kind of tint the College of Optometrists and NHTSA are warning against for night driving, since it noticeably reduces the light reaching the eye. Our clear lens is different: it transmits 91.6 percent of visible light and reads as close to optically clear, so it does not have that light-reduction problem. But “does not make things worse” is not the same as “helps with glare” — the clear lens has never been tested for, and is not marketed as, a glare-reduction or night-driving product. The interventions with real evidence behind them are unglamorous and not sold as eyewear. A clean windshield, inside and out, cuts the halo and starburst effect around oncoming lights significantly, since most of that scatter comes from film and micro-scratches on the glass, not from the driver’s eyes. Mirrors adjusted to avoid a direct headlight reflection, and a habit of glancing toward the right edge line rather than at an oncoming vehicle, both reduce momentary glare blindness. Because fatigue — not glare — is the bigger factor in night-driving safety, scheduled rest breaks and staying within hours-of-service limits do more for a driver’s safety than any lens choice. Drivers who need vision correction should get a current eye exam and, if their optometrist advises it, a prescription lens with an anti-reflective coating designed for night use. That is a different product from a non-prescription tinted lens: it is fitted to the individual’s prescription and headlight sensitivity, not sold as a one-size tint.Where a non-prescription lens does fit into a driver’s day
