One focal distance, two different tasks
A non-prescription reading lens is single-vision: it has exactly one focal distance ground into it. A book typically sits 14 to 16 inches from the eyes; a monitor usually sits farther away, often 20 to 28 inches depending on desk setup. Those are two different optical demands, and one single-vision lens cannot serve both distances at their sharpest at the same time — that is simply how a fixed-power lens works, not a flaw specific to any brand. So the honest framing is not “can one pair do both” but “can one pair do both well enough to be worth the compromise.” For most reading and near-computer use, the answer is often yes, because the two distances are close enough that a single moderate strength stays usable at both. But it is a compromise, and the wearer should know that going in rather than expect the lens to auto-focus.What actually lets one lens serve both distances
The strength number gets the attention, but it is not what determines whether a reader feels comfortable moving between a page and a screen for hours. That comes down to the optical quality of the lens material itself: how much visible light it lets through, whether it introduces color distortion, and what coatings it carries. A lens that transmits light unevenly or with a heavy cast makes both a printed page and a screen harder to read comfortably, independent of the magnification. Our own clear lens, tested by COLTS Laboratories (report O-SPG111015, accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 under A2LA cert 1612.01), transmits 91.6 percent of visible light — close to an untinted lens — while still filtering 99.99 percent at 400 nm, 95.1 percent at 410 nm, 63.0 percent at 420 nm, and 33.1 percent at 450 nm, with UVA and UVB both filtered above 99.99 percent. That high visible transmission, not the reading power, is what keeps a page looking white and a screen looking color-accurate through the same lens. This is also the right comparison point against ready-made magnifiers as a product class, never against any specific retailer or price point: a generic magnifier is usually just curved plastic stamped with a strength number, with no published transmittance or coating data behind it at all. The relevant question is not which one looks clearer on a shelf, it’s which one has a lab report a buyer can actually check.Four checks to run on any reader’s spec sheet
These checks apply to any brand’s reading glasses, not just ours. Run our own numbers through them as an example.- Does every percentage state its wavelength band? A figure like “filters blue light” with no band attached is not checkable. Ask for the number at a specific nanometer range — for example, our clear lens is stated as 63.0 percent at 420 nm and 33.1 percent at 450 nm, two very different numbers within the same broad “blue light” claim.
- Was it tested to a named standard, by a named accredited lab? Our clear lens group passed ANSI Z80.3 transmittance and chromaticity testing (three samples per group) through COLTS Laboratories under ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, A2LA cert 1612.01. Z80.3 governs light transmittance and color consistency — it says nothing about whether the printed reading power is optically accurate, and no reader’s ANSI pass should be read as testing magnification.
- Does “clear” mean anything specific? “Clear” is a visual description, not a spec. One of our own other lenses, used in the ZENOX line, is also sold as clear but averages about 52 percent transmission across the same blue band where our COLTS-tested clear lens runs from 33 to 95 percent depending on the exact wavelength — two lenses that would both be marketed as “clear” with materially different underlying numbers. The label doesn’t tell you the number; the report does.
- Are the coatings shared with the rest of the line, or specific to the reading version? In our case the reading power sits in the same coated optical lens used across non-reading styles, so coating quality is not a separate, cheaper tier reserved for readers.
Matching magnification strength to what you actually do
Reading strengths on non-prescription readers commonly run from +0.50 to +3.00; one PROSPEK style offers all nine strengths in that range, other styles offer a narrower set, and some frames carry no magnification at all. Higher numbers bring near objects into focus at a shorter working distance; lower numbers work at a longer one. It’s tempting to reason that because a screen sits farther away than a book, a lower strength should be chosen specifically for screen use. We checked that logic against our own strength and distance data and it did not hold up as a reliable rule — actual screen distance varies too much by desk, chair, and font size to generalize a downgrade. The more reliable approach is to pick the strength suited to the distance used for the majority of the day, whether that’s a book or a monitor, and treat performance at the other distance as a secondary benefit rather than the primary design target.What a reading lens does not do
A single-vision reading lens does not correct astigmatism, does not adjust itself between distances, and is not a substitute for an eye exam. If reading a book at one strength feels sharp but a screen at the same strength causes noticeable strain, that’s the fixed-focal-distance limitation showing up, and the fix is either accepting the trade-off, choosing a strength that splits the difference, or getting an actual eye exam and, if needed, prescription lenses. A non-prescription reader is a magnification tool with tested optical material behind it — nothing about it is diagnostic or corrective for underlying vision conditions.Where these numbers come from
