What actually causes digital eye strain
Digital eye strain (sometimes called computer vision syndrome) is a cluster of symptoms — dryness, burning, blurred vision, trouble refocusing, and tension in the head, neck or shoulders — that builds up over a sustained screen session. It does not have one single cause. The two largest contributors are mechanical, not optical. The first is focusing effort: holding focus at a fixed mid-range distance for long stretches keeps the eye’s focusing muscles engaged in a way that reading a book or glancing around a room does not, and that sustained effort is tiring in itself. The second is blink rate: people blink noticeably less often when concentrating on a screen, and the blinks that do happen are often incomplete, so the tear film that keeps the eye’s surface smooth is not being replenished as often as normal — a direct route to the dryness and burning most people describe. Two more factors compound both of these. Glare — light bouncing off the screen from overhead fixtures, a nearby window, or a screen brightness mismatched to the room — forces the eyes to work harder to resolve text against competing reflections. Posture — a monitor set too high, too low, or too far from a natural viewing distance — adds neck and shoulder strain that gets read as “eye” fatigue because it shows up during the same session. The changes with the most support behind them are behavioral, and none of them require buying anything.- Look away on a schedule. The commonly cited 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds — gives the focusing muscles a break and is the single most repeated piece of guidance in this area.
- Blink on purpose. A few deliberate, full blinks every few minutes re-spreads the tear film; this matters more the longer a session runs.
- Match monitor height and distance. Top of the screen at or just below eye level, roughly an arm’s length away, avoids the neck extension that turns into shoulder and upper-back tension.
- Control glare, not just brightness. Position the screen so windows and overhead lights are not reflecting off it, and set screen brightness close to the brightness of the room rather than much brighter or darker.
- Take real breaks. A five-minute break away from any screen every hour does more than any display setting.
